Awardee: Prof. Gary WONG Ka-leung

Prof. Gary Wong Ka Leung‘s research focuses on lanthanide chemistry for spectroscopy studies, molecular imaging and cancer therapy. He has already published more than 100 articles in peer reviewed journals with more than 3000 cited counts. He is serving as editor in Journal of Luminescence (Elsevier) and the international advisory board member in ChemPlusChem (Wiley). He was awarded the 2015 European Rare Earth and Actinide Society (ERES) Junior Award in recognition of his achievements and his contributions to the f-block elements field.
Among his most notable works, the invention of lanthanide primary cilium marker, Prof. Wong clinched the Gold Medal in the Medicine Category, International Innovation Award of the Polish Academy of Science Institute of Genetics and Animal Breeding (Special Medal) and the Prize of the Malaysian Association of Research Scientists at the 45th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2017. Prof. Wong was then awarded the HKBU President’s Award for Outstanding Young Research. He received 2-year funding support from the HKSAR Government to start up New Life Medicine Technology Company Limited. Within one year of the company’s establishment, the patents have been exclusively licensed to a sizeable company, which runs global life science business.

Underpinned by her in-depth research in sports and social inclusion, Prof. Cheung has developed a ”Unified Gymnastics For All” Program for students with and without intellectual disability through the support by the HKBU Knowledge Transfer Partnership Seed Fund. Testified by the Special Olympics Hong Kong and other stakeholders, the project has brought significant and sustainable benefits to the health and wellbeing of young students. The project has substantially enhanced public awareness of individual difference and social inclusion, thus fostering Hong Kong's long-term social capital. Prof. Cheung’s knowledge transfer endeavor is an excellent example of high-quality research and has had a prominent impact beyond academia.
