Holistic Startup Training Programme (HSTP)
 



Introduction

Holistic Startup Training Programme (HSTP) is a comprehensive entrepreneurship training programme for HKBU researchers, staff and students, who wish to turn innovative technologies / business ideas into viable and feasible business venture, as well as to make impact to the society.

This Programme comprises of the online courses, seminars and one-on-one tailor-made consultations.

For researchers, this Programme will amplify your research impact and give you a clearer sense of how to develop your technologies into commercial products, identify concrete commercialisation pathways forward.

For staff and students, this Programme not only paves the way for commercialisation of your innovations and protect your IP, but also empower yourself to interact better, and capture any audience at school and beyond.


Syllabus

HSTP comprises 4 courses, namely:

  • HSTP 1001 — Building a Winning Team and Pave Way to Successful Ventures & Research Impact (with Prof. Ikhlaq Sidhu - 20 hours)

  • HSTP 1002 — Ideation and Business Modelling (with Mr. Cesar Jung-Harada - 20 hours) 

  • HSTP 1003 — How to Captivate Any Audience and Connect Emotionally with Your Audience
                            (with Mr. Nathan Gold - 10 hours)

  • HSTP 1004 — Intellectual Property Rights for Innovators and Entrepreneurs (20 hours)

HSTP 1001 — Building a Winning Team and Pave Way to Successful Ventures & Research Impact


This course is co-developed by Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology at UC Berkeley.

Facilitator: Professor Ikhlaq Sidhu, Founding Director & Chief Scientist, Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology, UC Berkeley

Course Period: November to January

By the end of HSTP1001, you will acquire:

  • practical step-by-step guide to innovation;
  • real-life case study examples from world-class innovators;
  • a holistic and validated approach: Innovation Engineering;
  • leadership advice necessary for any manager or entrepreneur to create high performance teams;
  • as well as behaviors and mindsets needed by the innovating team.

 

The whole HSTP 1001 consists of the following modules:

BEST 1001: Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship in Hong Kong

Participants will develop detailed understanding of entrepreneurial mindset and skills.

Entrepreneurial experiences of local companies will also be shared.

Participants who are current HKBU staff and students, are required to complete this module.

Seminar 1: Master Class

This seminar will cover:

  1. from opportunity to execution
  2. our approach to innovation projects
  3. story and strategy
  4. innovation leadership

Seminar 2: Wrap Up

This seminar will wrap up what goes wrong during early stage of starting up a business. TBC TBC Online

Clinic Session

This is a one-on-one session.

Prof. Sidhu will provide consultations to each early stage venture, and to any teams that are interested in starting a business.

 

Participants are required to:
1. attend the other HSTP1001 modules before the Clinic Session
2. prepare a 5 minutes presentation to present a business idea

Each session will last 30 minutes approximately.

HSTP 1002 — Ideation and Business Modelling


This course is co-developed by Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and MakerBay Limited.

Facilitator: Mr. Cesar Jung-Harada, Director of MakerBay Limited

Start Date: December (Tentative)

By the end of HSTP1002, you will acquire skills and ability to: 
  - understand and apply design thinking methodology;     
  - break down a big problem into smaller pieces; choose objectives, strategies; definite metrics for success;     
  - ideate; brainstorm; give constructive feedback; connect the dots, merge ideas;     
  - rapid prototyping; versioning; advanced prototyping techniques; and     
  - understand the Protocol; beautiful accident; impact measurement and theory of change; business modeling and scalability.

 

The whole HSTP 1002 consists of the following modules:

BEST 1002: Design Thinking Fundamentals for Entrepreneurs

Participants will learn about the fundamental concepts of “Design Thinking”, in terms of how to ideate, validate and polish business model.

Participants who are current HKBU staff and students, are required to complete this module.

Masterclass


Recap the Design Thinking tools learnt from BEST 1002, participants will be guided to experience Design Thinking process, and brainstorm ideas under a same topic in the first half of the workshop.

Each team will then develop and potentially build a prototype for their TSSSU or own projects in the second half of the workshop.


Participants will be formed in groups. After the completion of this Workshop, each group is required to refine their TSSSU or own projects, and then present it on Clinic Session 1 & 2.

Clinic Session 1


Following up the innovations / business ideas developed in the Workshop, Mr. Harada will provide consultations on ideation and business model refinement.

Each group is required to refine their innovations / business ideas, and then present it on Clinic Session 1.

Prerequisite:

Attended BEST 1002 and the Masterclass

Each session will last 30 minutes approximately.

Clinic Session 2 + Presentation


Present final outcomes on each team's customer discovery, Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and business model after iteration.

Each group is required to pitch their prototype to all the participants.

Prerequisite:
Attended the Masterclass and Clinic Session 1

Clinic session will last 15 minutes approximately and the presentation will last 5 minutes.

HSTP 1003 — How to Captivate Any Audience and Connect Emotionally with Your Audience


This course is co-developed by Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and The Demo Coach.

Facilitators: Mr. Nathan Gold, Chief Coach at The Demo Coach, and other entrepreneurs / pitching coaches

Start Date: February (Tentative)

By the end of HSTP1003, you will acquire the tips, tricks and very important technique to present your ideas appealing to audience and buy-in your ideas:  
  - build foundation of networking; 
  - make connections; and 
  - develop rapport with all kinds of people.

 

The whole HSTP 1003 consists of the following modules:

Participants will learn how to instantly find something in common with anyone anywhere on the planet, how to become the most sought-after person in the room, and how to start creating more meaningful, lasting relationships.

BEST 1005: How to Captivate Any Audience and Connect Emotionally with Your Audience

This online course will cover: 
  1. How to captivate your audience 
  2. Connect emotionally with your audience 
  3. How to create and use a story matrix and a value preposition matrix 
  4. 12 opening techniques and the Red ToolBox 
  5. How to present to non-technical people
  6. How to master questions and answers

Throughout the year — —
Clinic Session

This is a one-on-one session.

An entrepreneur / pitching coach will provide consultations on pitching for research impact, and any teams that are interested in starting a business.

 

Participants are required to: 
  1. attend the other HSTP1003 modules before the Clinic Session 
  2. prepare a 60 seconds presentation to present a business idea

 

Each session will last 30 minutes approximately.

HSTP 1004 — Intellectual Property Rights for Innovators and Entrepreneurs


This course is developed by Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).

  - understand what IPRs are required for innovators and forming a company 
  - perform actions to protect the IPR

 

The whole HSTP 1004 consists of the following modules:

This is an introductory module where participants will understand how to best protect inventors, entrepreneurs and researchers-related intellectual property rights (IPRs).

  1. Which parts of IPRs relate to inventors, entrepreneurs and researchers
  2. How inventors, entrepreneurs and researchers could protect their IPRs

Who are Eligible


HSTP welcomes HKBU researchers, students, staff and stakeholders to participate.

Most suited for those who wish to amplify the research impact, for early stage ventures, and those who wish to commercialize their ideas with impact to the society. It is also suited for individuals who wish to empower their own interpersonal, design thinking and presentation skills for their studies and works.

Available spots are limited on first-come, first-serve basis. 


Priorities will be given to TSSSU application teams, BEST Ambassadors, and teams with innovation / business ideas.

Programme Fee


Original Price HK$ 10,000 per individual per module
Special offer for HKBU staff and students HK$ 2,000 per individual per module#
TSSSU Application Team Package* HK$ 5,000 per team for 4 modules

Committed HKBU participants who have 80% attendance can win a scholarship of HK$2,000 per module. The HK$2,000 will be reimbursed after the each module with 80% attendance (Based on the attendance record by KTO). The programme fee is non-refundable for withdrawal or cancellation once the payment is confirmed.

Important Notes to TSSSU application teams


Half of the team members of each team must attend any classes organised for the “Holistic Startup Training Programme” during the period stipulated by HKBU in order to fulfill the eligibility requirements set out in the “Guidelines for HKBU Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities”.
