Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship in Hong Kong
This training module is the first entrepreneurship training platform launched for HKBU students to learn entrepreneurial mindset and skills conducted by the Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). This training module is co-developed by KTO at HKBU and the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology at UC Berkeley. Special thanks to Prof. Ikhlaq Sidhu from UC Berkeley who contributes as a consultant of this training platform and shares his Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship to the training module content.
Learn with Entrepreneurs in Hong Kong
Five interactive sections will be delivered in this training module. For each section, apart from powerpoint slides, short video interviews with five local entrepreneurs will be shown for sharing their entrepreneurial experience as examples to further elaborate the mindset and skills.

Professor Ikhlaq Sidhu
Prof. Sidhu is the Chief Scientist and Founding Director of UC Berkeley’s Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology. He received the IEOR Emerging Area Professor Award from his department at Berkeley. Prof. Sidhu founded the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership. He serves as the faculty director of the Engineering Leadership Professional Program (ELPP).
His research areas include systems and stochastic models, strategic data analytics, and learning models. He has been granted over 60 US Patents in networking technology, IP telephony, communications, and mobile computing. He was awarded 3Com Corporation’s “Inventor of the Year” in 1999. Prof. Sidhu also serves as a Venture Advisor at Onset Ventures, a leading Silicon Valley investment firm.
Professor Cheah Kok-wai, FinstP
Prof. Cheah is the former Head and Chair Professor in Department of Physics, as well as Director of Institute of Advanced Materials, Hong Kong Baptist University. He took his B.Sc. Hon degree in Physics, then M. Sc and DIC in Science of Materials, and Ph. D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering all at Imperial College, London. After his Ph. D., Prof. Cheah has spent 10 years in the UK industry, including 8 years in Astrium Space, UK, working on various satellite projects including meteological satellites and the Space Station. He joined the Department of Physics, Hong Kong Baptist University in 1990. He is Fellow of Institute of Physics, UK. He also holds Visiting Professor position in Fudan University, Shanghai, China, Sun Yat-sen University and Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.
He is one of the founders of Cathay Photonics Limited, a spin-off company from Hong Kong Baptist University, and he is main person behind invention of the ultra-hard anti-scratch thin film.
His research areas include linear and non-linear optical properties of organic complexes and plasmonic nano-structures, organic and inorganic phosphors and organic electronics. He has presented more than 260 papers in journals and conferences, also 9 US patents and 2 Chinese patents.
Mr Erwin Huang
Erwin is a serial entrepreneur and a leader in social enterprise the eLearning field. He has extensive experience running from startups to public companies, and social enterprise. He is well known for his participation in the TV reality show where the Silicon Valley-trained expert and CEO of a listed company lived a in crummy subdivided apartment in Shum Shui Po, Hong Kong, earning 50 HKD per day. This experience had significantly changed Erwin’s view towards life, motivating him to actively engaging in social entrepreneurship and helping the underprivileged groups via social innovations and information technology.
In 2016, Erwin has accepted the invitation from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to teach Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship to university students. His mission is to let more young generations understand entrepreneurial spirit, identify social issues, as well as creating social impact through innovations.
Mr Steven Lam
Steven grew up from a low-income family in a public estate of East Kowloon. He studied community college - Diablo Valley College (DVC) in California, U.S. and completely funded himself through school by working in Chinese restaurant as a delivery boy after school everyday. During his time in college, he was eBay power seller by selling unlocked first generation iPhone, automobile parts and electronics. He also got elected as the Student Government President of DVC, which he was the first international student ever being a student government president of a California Community College. Then he got accepted to University of California, Berkeley - HAAS School of Business, which ranked as Top 3 Business School of the U.S. for undergraduate program.
After graduating in 2010, he returned to HK and started his own business with two friends who studied in DVC. While they were working in their second venture, Boxad, a company put advertisements on lunch boxes, they experienced a big problem on booking vans for delivery service. Then they started working on GoGoVan, which is the first and most popular Logistic Booking mobile app in Hong Kong. In less than one year, Steven and his team built the largest logistic fleet in Hong Kong, which including 18,000+ Cargo Vans and Trucks. GoGoVan is now operating in HK, SG, TW, KR and CN, with more than 45,000 registered vehicles and raised USD $16.5 million.
Dr Cathy Lui
Dr. Cathy Lui, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow of Hong Kong Baptist University's Department of Biology, is the co-founder of OPER Technology Limited.
Cathy and her team announced they had successfully used nano-particles to harmlessly extract stem cells from a rat's brain and then reinject them. It raised the question of whether the procedure could be used on humans as a cure for brain diseases like Alzheimer's.
OPER Technology Limited is to develop and perfect an innovative technology in nanomaterial-based personalized medicine that can offer an inexpensive, real-time monitoring, precise, effective and globally available medical technology, to improve the healthcare and clinical practices for restoring health and extending life of patients with incurable diseases. This new core technology is a nanosurgery with real-time monitoring that enables both specific cell harvest in complicated systems in the body, cell engineering and specific drug delivery to specific cells in the body.
Ms Viola Lam
Viola is the founder of FS Education, Neuro-linguistic Programming Practitioner and certified instructor of Play Therapy as well as the President of the Chinese Youth Entrepreneur Association . She has established FS Education in 2010, and was invited to make a debut in the “I Am Boss” program produced by the TVB. FS education has served more than 37,000 students. FS Education has 2 centres (one at Wanchai and the other at Mongkok). It offers tuition services, online learning platform (Star Program), and Mathematics problem solving lessons at over 30 schools.
Viola has strong belief in social entrepreneurship in promoting greater social harmony. FS Education has received the Caring Company aware for four consecutive years. Viola is also the President of the HK Fast Maths Association, and has organised a number of fast math competitions for 4 years.
