Celebration - HKBU Scholars’ Inventions Won Four Awards at Special Edition 2021 Inventions Geneva

 

Four of the HKBU TSSSU* companies’ technologies have made remarkable achievements on the global renowned invention award – 2021 Inventions Geneva. They won a Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury, two Gold Medals and a Silver Medal in this year’s online special edition of the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (Geneva Inventions Expo) - Special Edition 2021 Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days – Virtual Event held from 10 to 14 March 2021.

HKBU submitted four entries this year. The winning projects are:



The “Anti-scratch thin film coating on metal surface” invented by Professor CHEAH Kok Wai from the Department of Physics, which won the Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury.

The “Therapeutic inhibitor for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated cancers with responsive optical imaging function” invented by Professor Gary WONG Ka-leung and Dr LUNG Hong Lok from the Department of Chemistry, which won the Gold Medal.


The “Quality control markers for use in herbs authentication” invented by Dr Simon HAN Quanbin from the School of Chinese Medicine, which won the Gold Medal.


The “Portable body motion analyzer for elderly fall risk assessment” invented by Professor Jeffrey CHEUNG from the Department of Physics, which won the Silver Medal.

The “Anti-scratch thin film coating on metal surface” invented by Professor CHEAH Kok Wai, co-founder of Cathay Photonics Limited, is an anti-scratch thin film coated on metal surface in 3D design. The invention is value-added to the metal-based products e.g. watch case & strap as it increases surface's wear resistance without sacrificing their original appearance.

The “Therapeutic inhibitor for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated cancers with responsive optical imaging function” invented by Professor Gary WONG Ka-leung and Dr LUNG Hong Lok, former Director and current Director of BP InnoMed Limited respectively, provides nucleus-permeable small-molecule inhibitors, synthesis thereof and the use of said molecules to target the dimerisation interface of EBNA1, a critical process for the growth of EBVs and the associated tumours. This invention allows early detection and treatment, contributing to a higher survival rate. It replaces/minimises the use of radio- and chemo-therapies which greatly improves survival of patients and quality of life.

The “Quality control markers for use in herbs authentication” invented by Dr Simon HAN Quanbin, Director of Hong Kong Authentication Centre of Valuable Chinese Medicines Limited, is a convenient and low-cost method to efficiently authenticate the valuable herbal medicines such as Dendrobium Officinale and Cordyceps qualitatively and quantitatively, that suitable for commercial use particularly for medicines proprietors.

The “Portable body motion analyzer for elderly fall risk assessment” invented by Professor Jeffrey CHEUNG, CEO of Booguu Company Limited, provides fast and accurate fall risk screening for the elderly using wearable sensor, mobile app, edge, and cloud AI & ML algorithms to analysis body motion such as walking and standing.
