Dr Lung Hong-lok is an Assistant Professor from the Department of Chemistry at HKBU as well as the Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of BP InnoMed Limited (BPI). He is recognised for developing a new EBV-specific targeted therapy and commercialising the innovative cancer research discoveries. BPI has developed a novel drug which has the potential to become a next-generation treatment for cancers associated with Epstein–Barr virus (EBV).
We all got curiosity to see how start-up founders living a chill lifestyle but coupled with an equal level of professionalism when it comes to pitching their venture ideas to potential investors. In fact, starting up one’s own idea from scratch to life is indeed not an easy task. It might take double or triple the work a normal employee in the corporate world would pick up. However, this is in no way a direct rejection letter coming up your lane saying that “you are too young to do this” or “where are you going to get the money from?”

Global Venture Catalyst (GVC) is a socially-oriented initiative and platform organised by the University of California, Berkeley. The goal was to work with some of the top students around the world and help them connect with corporate and venture opportunities in today’s environment, where the conventional methods of connecting with potential employers and building venture teams has become more challenging. Based on their courses and programmes experiences, it is observed that design sprints and venture projects have become the new informal job interview. And, it is important to have these experiences and connections early enough before graduation.
Co-organised by the Language Centre and BEST, a writing workshop was tailor-made for BEST Ambassadors who were interested to take up some editing work for feature-story writing in the future.
Co-organised by the KTO and the Centre for Innovative Service-Learning (CISL) at HKBU, Pitch Perfect 1.0 is a 100% student-led pitching competition tailor-made for aspiring entrepreneurs. It aims to provide beginner start-up teams with the essential resources and expertise to excel in a standard pitch deck.
HKBU presents the annual Distinguished Alumni Award to acknowledge the outstanding business, professional or scholastic achievements of its alumni, as well as their service and contributions to the University and society. The Award also aims to motivate current students to learn from the awardees’ valuable experiences and successes. This year, BEST Community Industry Fellow Dr Cathy Lui (Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of OPER Technology Limited) and our close working partner Mr William Yeung (Co-Owner and Executive Vice-chairman of the HKBN Group) were awarded this very distinguished award. Our heartiest congratulations to both awardees!
HKBU spin-off company, New Life Medicine Technology Company Limited (New Life), invented a non-invasive urine-based detection kit for detecting early prostate cancer. Coupled with the use of the urine test, Prof Gary Wong Ka-leung (Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at HKBU), and the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU Medicine) have jointly developed the Spermine Risk Score, which provides a non-invasive and more reliable method for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Jointly organised by HKSTP and seven local universities, HKBU, PolyU, CityU, HKU, CUHK, HKUST and LingU, the annual 7-day start-up challenge – Hong Kong Techathon 2021 was successfully concluded in January. Over 1,000 participants enrolled in the competition and the four tracks - New Generation Technology, AI & Fintech, Smart City and Social Impact & Health Tech received over 100 project submissions for the final presentation!
The Cyberport University Partnership Programme (CUPP), organised by Cyberport, is a FinTech-focused entrepreneurship programme that aims to unleash participants’ full potential and gain insights into the global market. In the 2020 cohort, it offered participants a chance to participate in an online Entrepreneurship Bootcamp offered by IESE Business School of University of Navarra and receive mentorship from industry elites.
HKGCC Business Case Competition 2020 was organised by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Citibank, Great Eagle Group, NEC Corporation, NWS and Sino Group. With a theme “Building better, brighter businesses”, the competition promotes exchange of ideas between university students and businesses as well as encourages students to develop innovative solutions for real-life business cases.
Four of the HKBU TSSSU* companies’ technologies have made remarkable achievements on the global renowned invention award – 2021 Inventions Geneva. They won a Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury, two Gold Medals and a Silver Medal in this year’s online special edition of the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (Geneva Inventions Expo) - Special Edition 2021 Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days – Virtual Event held from 10 to 14 March 2021.
